The day we lost Mark Sandman was one of those days when music died. I read somewhere that PJ Harvey said once that Morphine are the most sexy band she know. But it's a band that didn't record bad album or bad song. "Like Swimming" was the first album of them I've heard and it's still my favourite one to this day - unique atmosphere, great songwriting, surprisingly coherent having such different songs like "Murder for the Money" and "Swing it low". My copy of Like Swimming is a Ryko advance cd which I am going to give spin soon. Was really bummed to find out that they were leaving the label. There are a bunch of great ones, always loved the hard riffing on "Thursday". I don't really have a favorite song, I guess. I was a skeleton, gf was a pumpkin and after the show we passed the tequila bottle with the band. Then there was the Halloween show at the Black Cat. Mark asked me how many stars I would have given the album (RS gave it 3 1/2) I told him 3 1/2 was about right. First one was at the 930 club in DC right when the very positive Rolling Stone review came out. I got to hang with the band at a few shows. Was blown away by the advance cassette of Cure For Pain and they became one of Rykos best sellers along with Sugar, MMW and the Bowie, Zappa, and Costello catalogs. just about the time they signed up with the label.
